Fairytale – Favola – is the screen adaptation of a play by Filippo Timi.
Directed by Sebastiano Mauri, Timi stars in the title role as Fairytale.
The film gives us the story of Mrs Fairytale – a perfect housewife in 1950’s America, a woman who becomes aware of her own unhappiness and embarks on a process of personal liberation.
In a world of stuffed poodles, whiskey-infused teas, sinful mambo lessons, and threats of alien invasion, Fairytale begins to explore a world where anyone can be who they want to be.
You probably describe this as a surreal comedy – the warmth of its humour and characters deliberately concealing the darkness beneath the veneer.
The production design is beautiful – lovingly detailed and effortlessly evoking the Americana dreams that were broadcast to the world.
